In 1955, Harry Kavanagh’s uncle sneaks into a ringside seat in the old Madison Square Garden for the Marciano/Moore heavyweight championship bout. “Hey kid, outta my seat.” It’s Humphrey Bogart. Rewarding the kid for his boldness, Bogart gives him his fedora. Many years later a housebound, lonely Harry Kavanagh mourns the loss of his wife, Felicity who perished in an automobile accident.
When the Chief Medical Examiner does a swan dive from a third story window, Harry suspects his wife may have been the victim of foul play. Harry goes to his local precinct, but the police politely ignore his inferences. In the following weeks, Harry is manhandled by the brawny “Liverwurst Twins,”nearly drowns during a Nor’easter, and is threatened by a mobster. He’s rescued by one mysterious woman who bathes in lilac-scented perfume and is stalked by another. Putting one unsteady size nine after the other, Harry trails a church scandal and discovers a political cover up.
But wait, there’s more …
