Women and Crime – Historic Richmond Town Courtroom

Sunday, Nov 6, 2pm at Historic Richmond Town’s Courthouse, 441 Clarke Ave, SINY 10306

Staten Island OutLOUD & the Staten Island Women’s Bar Association join forces to present “Women and the Criminal Justice System,” a community dialogue on the reasons why most women are in prison and the challenges they face.

Guest speakers: Hon. Michael McMahon, Richmond County District Attorney; Hon. Wanda DeOliveiria, Chief of the Special Victims Bureau of the Richmond County District Attorney’s Office; Mario Galluci, Esq., noted defense attorney; and others TBA.

If the case against Brigid O’Shaughnessy were brought to trial now, how would it be prosecuted? How would she be defended? Does the system treat female defendants differently from male defendants? If so, what are those differences? How are formerly incarcerated women reintegrated into society upon release?

Other issues that we’ll explore include: a layperson’s overview of criminal work; how defense attorneys work with the police & DA; how defense attorneys work with private investigators. We’ll also examine a frequent layperson’s question: “How can a defense attorney represent a ‘bad guy'”? More details TBA

Tibetan Falcons and Sky Burial – Tibetan Museum

Saturday, Nov 5, 2pm at the Tibetan Museum, 338 Lighthouse Ave, Staten Island NY 10306

As Staten Island OutLOUD celebrates Dashiell Hammett’s The Maltese Falcon for The Big Read, we’ll take a cultural detour to explore on of Staten Island’s treasures, the Jacques Marchais Museum of Tibetan Art.  And there we’ll find some intriguing & unexpected tie-ins to some themes and imagery in The Maltese Falcon.

We’ll examine how Tibetan art and art objects incorporate bird images (plenty of cranes, maybe a falcon or two), and the Himalayan custom of sky burial (plenty of vulture, and maybe a few falcons, as they eat carrion).  We’ll also hear from Meg Ventrudo, the museum’s Director, about a notorious  Asian art heist – Shades of The Maltese Falcon?

This event is free and open to the public.   Side door to Shrine Room
