Staten Island OutLOUD kicks off our Autumn 2013 series for The Big Read: Stories & Poems of Edgar Allan Poe!  Everybody is welcome to join our Poe-A-Thon:  Raucous readings of The Raven & other favorites.  Have your photo taken with Poe!  19th century dulcimer music, film clips, arts & crafts for kids. Giveaways.  Free & fun!

Do you want to wear a costume?  We’d love that!  If you’d rather not, that’s fine too!

If you like mystery and suspense, you’ll love Hitchcock. Check out Sundog Theatre’s The 39 Steps – Thurs Sept 26 thru Sunday, Sept 29 – at Snug Harbor’s Veterans Hall. Hitch said that Poe was his inspiration. For that reason, Sundog will give away 15 books by Poe – with a neighborly nod to Staten Island OutLOUD’autumn series, “Stories and Poems of Edgar Allan Poe”. Jan-Feb 2014: A Little Mo’ Poe!

Poe closeup - ByronicStaten Island OutLOUD is proud to receive our third award from the National Endowment for the Arts.

We’re hosting The Big Read in our community this fall & winter, featuring Stories & Poems of Edgar Allan Poe: Sept 2013 – Feb 2014.

We’ve presented performance art, readings, concerts, two voyages to Poe’s Cottage in the Bronx, book discussions, film screenings, an OutLOUD performance in the fabulous Morgan Library & Museum, a tour of an historic cemetery, a Poe seance, a zombie fest, film screenings, and special events for very young readers.

Although we initially planned to complete our Poe Big Read in November, 2013, so many people asked for more – Poe is huge on Staten Island!  So we’re hosting A Little Mo’ Poe – Some interesting new events in Jan-Feb 2014. Check our schedule for updates.  Join us, and bring family & friends!  All our events are free.

Declaration of Independence – North Shore: Sun June 30 at Fort Wadsworth

Staten Island OutLOUD reads the Declaration of Independence on the North Shore: Sunday, June 30, 3pm at Fort Wadsworth, Bay Street & School Road, SINY 10305 (enter through the Guard Station at the end of Bay Street, near the Verazanno Bridge).

When was the last time you had a chance to read the Declaration?  Join us as we reflect on the meaning of the national holiday – On the sacrifices of our forebears – On the work of our founders.  BRING A LAWN CHAIR!

We’ll read the Declaration together and share ideas on the document that proposed a radical new idea. We’ll also feature a few related texts, plus a literary surprise or two.

Park in the Visitors Center parking lot, then follow the sidewalk to the spectacular Harbor Overlook, where we’ll gather in a shady spot.

Free and open to the public.  Please bring a lawnchair!

Declaration of Independence – South Shore: Sat June 29 at the Conference House

Staten Island OutLOUD’s annual reading of the Declaration of Independence on the South Shore: Saturday, June 29, 2pm at the historic  Conference House, 7455 Hylan Blvd, SINY 10307 (southern end of Hylan Blvd, at Saterlee St)

Garden Party – A fun & informal OutLOUD benefit: Sun, June 9

Staten Island OutLOUD invites our friends to a relaxed garden party.  Warm conviviality, champagne & light fare, friends and fun.  We’re hosting an informal gathering to support our free programs. We’ll be very grateful for your donation, whatever the amount.

We’ll kick off our Summer 2013 series. We’ll toast the members of our newly-formed Friends of OutLOUD.  We’ll look ahead to our twelfth birthday.  Join us to support OutLOUD’s free programs!

Paws & Read OutLOUD for Kidz: Wednesday Aug 7 at Richmondtown NYPL

Wednesday, August 7, 2013 at 3pm – Richmondtown Branch Library, 200 Clarke Ave, SINY 10306.  THIS EVENT WAS ORIGINALLY SET FOR WEDNESDAY JULY 31. IT’S NOW RESCHEDULED FOR WED AUG 7.  (The library will be closed July 31 for a tech upgrade.)

Kids ages 5-10 can have a lot of fun while they strengthen their reading skills and build confidence, by reading aloud to a patient listener: a licensed therapy dog, Sweetie Pie (a kindly boxer) and Gracie (a dachsund princess).  Kids can bring their favorite books from home, or borrow books from the library’s collection
