Staten Island OutLOUD opens its Autumn series on historian Nathaniel Philbrick’s gripping story of “In the Heart of the Sea”, with readings & book giveaways. We’ll feature the Noble’s current exhibit of four rarely seen paintings by the masterful Island artist John Noble.
Earlier this year, the Noble Maritime Collection borrowed four oil paintings by John A. Noble from private collectors. They haven’t been on public display for nearly 40 years, but are now on exhibit in the houseboat gallery.
If you are a fan of Noble’s work and have not seen them, or if you’d like to see them again, come on Sunday, 9/29 —the last day the paintings will be on view. Join Staten Island OutLOUD for our NEA/The Big Read kick-off event, Maritime Art in the Heart of the Sea at 2 PM. www.statenislandoutloud.org

Island musicians Joan Moore & Gary Moore – Allergic to B’s – co-host this event on the Tavern Terrace with Staten Island OutLOUD. It’s a curtain-raiser for OutLOUD’s new autumn series for The Big Read/National Endowment for the Arts.
Gary & Joan will sing songs of the sea, and they’ll perform several sea poems. We invite everyone to read a poem of the sea – Your original work is especially welcome!
This year we’re celebrating Herman Melville’s 200th birthday with an exploration of “In the Heart of the Sea” by historian Nathaniel Philbrick. It’s the chilling story of the wreck of the whaleship “Essex” in 1820; it inspired Melville as he wrote “Moby Dick”.
The Tavern Terrace concerts are always relaxed & family-friendly. Buy a beer, ice cream or other snacks. OutLOUD will also give away books: What’s not to love?

September – December, 2019. For the 10th consecutive year, the National Endowment for the Arts has chosen Staten Island OutLOUD to present The Big Read in our community! From September through December 2019, we are proud to present a series of events exploring Nathaniel Philbrick’s fascinating story of the 1820 wreck of the whaleship Essex. It inspired Herman Melville as he began work on “Moby Dick”.

The poet Audre Lorde made her home on Staten Island.
Staten Island OutLOUD celebrates the life and work of this pioneering poet with readings and a stroll through her neighborhood, along St Pauls Avenue.
Free. Wear comfortable shoes. Rain or shine; if it rains, we’ll meet at Victory Blvd & St Pauls Ave, but we’ll stroll to a nearby indoor venue.

If you’re interested in the poetry, but would rather skip the stroll, just join us at El Patron restaurant at 2:30pm: 520 Bay St, SINY 10304 (corner of Bay St & Sands St). Inexpensive menu!
